Wine Labels

ARTS 412: Graphic Design Software II

The assignment was to create wine labels for two market position objectives: casual and contemporary. The "Big Cat" label was meant to satisfy the casual group, and the "Blue Ripple" label was my approach to the contemporary group.

My Process

1. Sketches

I started with some sketches. For the casual category, many of my ideas revolved around featuring a tiger or a snake. Neither of those animals are associated with wine, and I hoped that by including something unexpected on my label, the viewer would experience more surprise or interest. For the modern category, I experimented with creating something more abstract.

2. Initial Vector Drafts

Once I had some ideas, I moved on to seeing how they could potentially look when I vectorized them. For the casual category, I made two snake-themed versions but then decided to try working with the tiger theme instead.
For the modern category, I made a very rough draft that was inspired by ripples in water. I decided to continue working on that idea.

3. Further Refinement

In this next stage, I came very close to what would become the final version of my ripple-themed label. I also made a first draft of the back labels, but I didn't like either of them. They seemed too boxy. I also knew the black rectangle around the bar code needed to be changed.

At this point, I decided to completely overhaul the tiger-themed label. It seemed too basic, and I knew I could do better.

4. Final Versions

I completely re-did both the front and back labels for the tiger design, and then made improvements to the typography and barcode for the back label of the ripple design.

5. Prototypes and Photography

The final part of this assignment was to bring our wine labels into reality and photograph them. After a long search, I found two bottles that worked with my designs. The first bottle contained a white wine that contrasted well with my blue design, and it had a cap that matched almost perfectly. The second bottle contained a rose wine, which I liked because the color was analogous with my design. Its cap also matched the color of my design fairly well, but I actually changed my label's color to make it even more similar to the cap.

After peeling off the original labels, I glued mine on and then went to my university's photography studio where I set up the lights and the seamless. After taking some pictures, I went upstairs to the painting studio and took more pictures there with the intention of referencing wine and paint nights.
